We're pleased to offer minor surgeries, including cryotherapy, and joint injection services at Bluenose Health in Halifax. Minor surgery and cryotherapy are procedures that involve either local anesthesia or none at all, and are minimally invasive. These procedures can include:

• Skin tags/skin biopsy
• Skin cyst drainage and removal
• Wart treatment
• Mole removal and biopsy of growths​ (including endometrial biopsies)
• Nexplanon insertion / removal​

• IUD insertion and removal
• Hemorrhoid excision
• Pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions
• Laceration repair of skin and soft tissue
• Foreign body removal
• Toe nail removal

Cryotherapy can be used very successfully for a variety of lesions and works by rapidly freezing tissue cells which then thaw, causing the disintegration of those cells. Lesions treatable with cryotherapy can include different forms of keratoses; warts; lentigines (flat brown lesions which do not darken following sun exposure); skin tags; and superficial spreading basal cell carcinoma.

Joint injections

In addition to minor surgeries, other common procedures include therapeutic injections for a variety of conditions, providing safe and effective reduction of pain and inflammation. The healthcare providers at Bluenose Health can inject medications directly into a patient's joints to reduce pain and swelling, and to increase range of motion. The benefit of joint injections can be experienced within a few days and relief can last for months.

​Injections can be made for relief in the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle and other areas of the body experiencing pain from conditions such as arthritis, gout, haemorrhage, and to relieve pain in a grossly swollen joint. Other conditions that may see relief from joint injection include:

Before attending for minor surgery, you will need to receive a diagnosis for the particular medical issue you are seeking to receive treatment for. You will then be given an appointment for your procedure. Please note we do not offer minor surgery for cosmetic purposes.

Recovery from minor surgical procedures is typically quick, with most patients resuming normal activities within a few days and even hours (depending on your procedure). Your Bluenose Health care provider will provide specific aftercare instructions, which may include:

• Wound care: Guidelines on how to care for the incision site to prevent infection
• Medications: Information on pain relief and any antibiotics prescribed
• Follow-up: Details on when to return for a check-up or to have stitches removed
